Fine motor milestones

Birth to 3 months of age
-Able to calm with rocking, touching and gentle sounds
-Starts to open fists from a closed position
-Brings hands up to or near mouth
-Attempts to reach for toy when placed above chest
-Eye contact and attention to your face
-Enjoys a variety of movements
3 to 6 months of age
-Uses both hands to explore toys
-Transfers toys from one hand to the other while laying on back
-Reaches with both hands to grab feet while laying on back 
-Brings hands and objects to mouth consistently
-Reaches out for nearby toys when on belly
-Able to calm with rocking, touching and gentle sounds
-Is not upset by everyday sounds
-Assists with or manages bottle holding by self

6 to 9 months of age 
-Picks up small object with thumb and fingers 
-Explores and examines objects with both hands and mouth
-Turns several pages of a board book at once
-Experiments with the amount of force needed to pick up different objects
-Imitates others in simple play
-Focuses on objects near and far
-Investigates shape, size and texture of toys and surroundings
-Holds bottle or cup by self and uses correctly

9 to 12 months of age
-Claps hands
-Releases toys or objects into a container with a large opening 
-Uses thumb and pointer finger to pick up tiny objects
-Crawls to and away from objects and people
-Finger feeds self and may be starting to use utensils 
-Uses an open cup correctly and with strong hand support

12 to 18 months of age 
-Stacks two objects
-Helps with getting dressed and undressed
-Can scribble
-Holds and drinks from an open cup without issue
-Turns pages in a board book one at a time
-Points to identify requested items
-Puts toys into a container with smaller opening and takes them out
-Flings a ball or toy
18 to 24 months of age 
​
-Able to pull a toy behind them while walking 
-Flips switches on and off
-Sorts shapes and colors
-Uses crayons, pens and markers on paper
-Stacks 5 or more small blocks or toys on top of each other
-Takes toys apart and puts them back together 
-Puts hands out in front of body in preparation for catching a thrown ball
​-Able to throw object in the air for 1-3 feet
